Located 32 kilometers North East of Shillong City in Meghalaya, Shillong Airport or Umroi Airport is operated by the Airports Authority of India and Indian Air Force together. It was established in mid 1960s and became operational during the mid 1970s. The airport features 6,000 feet long runway and is situated at the height of 2908 feet above the sea level. The Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation has launched Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) program to increase the air traffic at Shillong Airport. Under UDAN, Shillong Airport will be well-connected to many northeast Indian cities, such as Agartala, Imphal, and Aizawl, at the end of 2017.
Shillong, also called as “Scotland of the East”, is a popular hill station among nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Shillong Peak is the highest point in the city, which offers a picturesque view of greenery and waterfalls. Other famous tourist attractions in Shillong include Rengthiam Falls, Elephant Falls, Shillong Cathedral, and Wards Lake. Mawjymbuin Caves is another famous sight-seeing spot in Shillong.
