The Coimbatore International Airport located at Peelamedu, 13 km from the Coimbatore City, boasts of being the 19th busiest airport in India. Constructed in the year 1940, the airport was earlier known as Peelamedu Civil Aerodrome. The passenger traffic in Coimbatore airport has increased substantially by 24.4 % in the year 2017 due to newer routes, more flights, and economical rates. The airport handles a passenger traffic of more than 1.5 million annually. In Tamil Nadu, it’s the second largest in terms of passenger traffic after the Chennai International Airport. In 2013, the airport became the first airport in India to harness solar power energy to run its utility grid system.
