Mahayogi Gorakhnath / Gorakhpur Airport, situated on NH 28 (Lucknow-Barauni National Highway), serves the city of Gorakhpur and is approximately 8 km east of the city center. Gorakhpur airport is operated as a civil enclave at the Gorakhpur Air Force station of the Indian Air Force (IAF). It is owned by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and administered jointly by the AAI and the IAF. Gorakhpur airport was renamed as Mahayogi Gorakhnath Airport recently.
The city of Gorakhpur is home to several beautiful historical monuments. The most famous one is the Gorakhnath temple, the place where Yogi Gorakhnath performed austerities in ancient times. Another beautiful temple is the Vishnu temple of the 12th century, which features a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu. Other places to visit include Imambara, an 18th century dargah of a Sufi saint- Roshan Ali Shah, Ramgarh Tal (a beautiful natural lake), Veer Bahadur Singh Planetarium, Kushmi Forest, Arogya Mandir – a Yoga and Naturopathy center, and Gita Vatika, where hymns are continuously sung to Radha, the Divine consort of Lord Krishna. Gorakhpur, which shares a border with Nepal is also an important access point for Buddhist tourism, to sites across the border, like Lumbini Gardens and Kapilavastu.
