Amausi Airport also known as Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport is located in the Amausi area, about 12 km from Lucknow city center, and was constructed in the year 1986 to facilitate VVIPs. It was earlier known as Amausi Airport before being renamed after Chaudhary Charan Singh, fifth prime minister of India. Airports Authority of India (AAI) decided to upgrade the airport to handle increasing number of passengers. It was granted international status in May 2012. The airport boasts of being the 11th busiest airport in India and the second busiest and largest in North and Central India. It handled about 3.97 million passengers in 2016-17. It was awarded as the second-best airport in the world in the category of 2-5 million passengers. The airport was also awarded AAI's ‘Best Airport’ award in July 2013 along with Jodhpur Airport.
