Located at around 12 km away from Madurai Railway Station, Madurai Airport is a customs airport serving the state of Tamil Nadu. Established in the year 1957, it is the fourth busiest airport in Tamil Nadu in terms of passenger traffic and aircraft movements. In the financial year 2016-2017, the passenger traffic of Madurai Airport was 978, 919 as compared to 842, 300 in the year 2015-2016, showing a growth rise of 16.2 %. Madurai Airport was used by the Royal Air Force in World War II.
