Located 16.9 kilometers from Tuticorin, Tuticorin Airport serves Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts in Tamil Nadu. The State Government of Tamil Nadu has undertaken plans to upgrade the airport, including resurfacing of existing runway, strengthening of apron, taxiway, and cargo handling capacities. For this work, the Airports Authority of India will be provided with 586 acres of land by September 2017. For the operations of Indian Air Force and the Indian Coast Guard, the airport has been allocated an additional 110 acres of land. Tuticorin Airport is the fifth busiest airport in the state of Tamil Nadu after Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, and Madurai.
Tuticorin, also called as Thoothukudi or the “Pearl City “, is popular for its beaches, temples, and historical sites. Sankara Rameshwarar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located near the old bus stand. Vallanadu Blackbuck Sanctuary is located in the Vallanadu village and famous for its natural beauty. Hare Island attracts many tourists during the festival of Pongal. Church of Lady of Snow, Kazhugumalai, and Kulasekarapattinam Mutharamman Temple are other tourist attractions located in and around Tuticorin.
