The Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is located at Babatpur, around 18 km north-west of Varanasi. It was earlier known as Varanasi Airport and was officially renamed in honor of the former Prime Minister of India in October 2005. The Union Cabinet gave it an international status in October 2012. The total passenger traffic in the year 2016-17 increased to 1,916,454 from 1,383,962 in 2015-16 with a percentage growth of 38.5 %.
