Vijayawada International Airport (VGA) is the newest Indian airport in the international circuit, and it serves Andhra Pradesh Capital Region. It is located at Gannavaram, 13 km north-east from Vijayawada city limits, and is situated on NH 16 (Chennai-Kolkata National Highway). In keeping with increasing air traffic and its recently conferred international status by the Govt. of India on 5 May 2017, the Airports Authority of India is undertaking major infrastructural changes at the airport. The airport is constructed on an airfield that served as a military airbase during World War II.
Vijayawada is the business hub of Andhra Pradesh and it is a place with historical and religious significance. The airport being just a half hour away from the city, there are many places one can visit like Kanaka Durga Temple, Undavalli Caves, Prakasam Barrage across the Krishna river, Besant Road (for shopping and eateries), Rajiv Gandhi Park, Victoria Museum, Kolleru Lake, and Gandhi Hill.
