Tirupati International Airport was established in 1976. In 1999, it was upgraded and opened for passenger traffic. It is located in Reninguta in Andhra Pradesh, which is 14 km east of Tirupati town and 39 km away from the popular Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala. It has been renamed as Sri Venkateswara Airport after Lord Venkateswara of the temple town. It got the status of an international airport in February 2012. It was awarded the Best Tourist Friendly Airport under the category of State Annual Excellence Awards in 2015-16.
Tirupati is known to be one of the holiest Hindu pilgrim sites. The temple of Lord Venkateswara is visited by thousands of pilgrims throughout the year. It is about 39 km from the main town. Numerous shrines and holy places are scattered all over the town along with sacred rivers and other archaeological wonders. You can also visit Talakona Waterfalls, Rock Garden, and Chandragiri Palaces and Fort.
